Thermal Bridge at Internal Corner Wall Junction
Thermal imaging identifies a distinct cold spot in an internal corner, likely caused by thermal bridging.
The thermal image displays a pronounced cold area, indicated by dark purple and black hues, located within an internal corner recess. The surrounding wall surfaces appear considerably warmer in orange and yellow, highlighting a distinct temperature differential at the junction.
Technical insight
Internal corners are common sites for geometric thermal bridging. Because the external surface area of a corner is larger than its internal surface area, heat escapes more rapidly through the junction than through the flat wall. This thermal image clearly shows a significant drop in surface temperature in the recess. Prolonged cold spots like this increase the risk of surface condensation and subsequent mould growth, as moisture from the indoor air condenses on the cold surface. Remediation typically involves applying continuous internal or external wall insulation to break the thermal bridge.
Likely cause
Likely: A geometric thermal bridge where the wall junction lacks continuous insulation. Possible: Localised missing insulation or draughts penetrating the building envelope at the floor-to-wall junction.
