Airtightness Testing in a Stratford Victorian Terrace
Conducting a blower door airtightness test in a Victorian terrace to identify uncontrolled draughts.
A technician monitors live airtightness data on a laptop during a blower door test. The red fabric panel and fan assembly are installed in an external doorway to depressurise the property.
Technical insight
Blower door testing measures the overall airtightness of a dwelling by installing a specialised fan within an external doorway. By systematically depressurising or pressurising the property, the equipment calculates the volume of uncontrolled air leakage through the building envelope. In older homes such as Victorian terraces, excessive draughts contribute heavily to heat loss, thermal discomfort, and poor energy efficiency. Identifying and quantifying these gaps is a crucial step in any retrofit programme. Once the overall leakage rate is established, the depressurised environment allows technicians to use thermal imaging or smoke pencils to pinpoint exact defect locations for targeted draught-proofing.
